Developing an Entrepreneurial Mindset

entrepreneurial mindsetIf you are in business for yourself, regardless of your level of success today, you either have the Entrepreneurial Mindset of being energized and excited by daily opportunities OR you feel bogged down and stuck.

Many times I hear people use the phrases ‘small business owner’ and ‘entrepreneur’ interchangeably, but just because you have your own business does NOT make you an entrepreneur.

One of my favorite entrepreneurs has a quote that, since I first heard it, completely resonated with me.  And it is the at the core of the Entrepreneurial Mindset.

“The world doesn’t need more people playing small. It’s time to stop hiding out and start stepping out. It’s time to stop needing and start leading. It’s time to start sharing your gifts instead of hoarding them or pretending they don’t exist. It’s time you started playing the game of life in a “big” way.”

What are the characteristics of an Entrepreneurial Mindset?

Entrepreneurs are possibility thinkers.  They think ‘what if this works?’ and ‘how can I incorporate that?’. They are always asking questions and wondering ‘how can I do it better?’.  Just think about the iPad.  We had laptops, smartphones, and electronic notebooks and e-readers.  But Steve Jobs added the iPad to the fulfill the needs of people who wanted to have access to great apps, easy social media access and internet connectivity, without having to pay for a computer.

Entrepreneurs will learn new skills to take their business to the next level.  If there is a skill that will enhance their business, an entrepreneur will find an expert and go learn from them.  Period.  So many times, business owners say that need to learn how to do this or that, but never do.  And then wonder why their business is not growing the way they want.

Entrepreneurs are willing to take on challenges and obstacles in order to push their business forward.  Challenges and obstacles pop up, as they do for EVERYONE…. they are UNCOMFORTABLE.  But an entrepreneur meets the challenge, works through it – no matter how long it takes – and comes out on the other side.  It’s absolutely OK to say ‘this is not a good fit for my business’.  It is NOT OK to say ‘this is too difficult to implement’.

If you find something uncomfortable, I want you to think of this picture, because this is how an entrepreneur thinks….

comfort zone

Entrepreneurs DO NOT make Excuses.  Excuses lead to procrastination.  And the things that need to get done, don’t.

“Live with no regrets. The way to do this is to honor your words for they do not return void. Produce when you commit to produce, win when you can, lose gracefully, relax with no guilt and love life with passion. You deserve the best, be your best.” -Jeffrey Combs

Do YOU want to Develop an Entrepreneurial Mindset?

You absolutely MUST ‘hang around’ and learn from other successful entrepreneurs.  You become like those you spend the most time with.  Most of us think in terms of what to avoid.  Like not wanting our kids to ‘hang out’ with the wrong crowd.  Why?  We don’t want them to become the wrong crowd.

If you ask any successful entrepreneur how they got to where they are, they will always tell you about the people around them who influenced them.

Buy books and listen to audio training from the best entrepreneurs and join facebook and social networking groups with like-minded entrepreneurs.  Here are some great places to start:
